I notice that you frequently “code switch” into a Black Vernacular English-derived accent or use vocabulary or syntax from BVE to emphasize humorous or playful moments in your content. I am concerned about this practice. Folks who are White or White-passing may appear “cool” to other Whites when using BVE, but BVE has great cultural importance to the Black community and Black American speakers of BVE have historically experienced racially motivated disenfranchisement and inhumane treatment, not to mention exclusion, on account of their use of BVE. When you use BVE in your content it does not meet the need for understanding of and consideration for this cultural history and struggle. I ask that you discontinue “code switches” to BVE in your content and that you seek feedback from the Black community re: how you can demonstrate respect going forward.
