Etho Plays Minecraft – Episode 589: Obsidian Blasting

Minecraft Viki (video wiki) ➜ https://minecraft.viki.gg

Today we do a major overhaul and expansion on our Nether ice tunnels. I discuss an idea for solving the inventory issues caused by block variations. We rework our Wither fighting chamber to automatically create and harvest obsidian. Then we check out how our plans for the Breeze and Skeleton farm are panning out.

  1. I've always thought in general a recycler would be a great feature. Not only would it be helpful to reduce clutter but promote real world awareness to not waste materials just because you have too much. Having an auto crafter and recycler would be a game changer for a more streamlined storage system.

  2. Hi Etho, I thought the question of the day was such a fun one. Over the years I’ve watched you, I’ve actually started university for nutrition. With your concern of carbohydrates and sugars, carbohydrates are essential for your body to an extent as they serve as fast energy! If bread is your go-to, opting for more whole grains or fermented breads like sourdough could be good options. Breads are mainly insoluble fiber so they pass through your system quickly which is why you can typically eat so much of it before feeling full. Pairing your bread with proteins or eating some soluble fiber such as avocado or fruit jams on your bread should help you feel full faster.

  3. Carbohydrates in themselves aren't bad for you, actually quite the opposite (not counting sugars, which are carbohydrates). It's just that you need to eat the whole grain. If you just eat the kernels, you lose out on all the fiber and other important nutrients which make it healthy.

  4. what if each block didnt have variants at all and you had to select what type of block you want to place with like ctrl + scroll wheel when its in your hotbar and selected to go through each type of variant you want to place and then when you place the cobblestone block, it'll place it as a stair block if that's what you selected in the scroll menu

  5. Yes, I use the bundle for compasses and maps ALL the time. They are super useful for navigation related things. Occasionally they can also be useful during/before/after a building project if you have some random leftovers or a few different blocks of varying small numbers. Primarily they are a lifesaver for early game though, when you're out collecting a bunch of necessities but haven't decided where to settle down yet. But my single biggest use for them at any point in the game is for compasses and maps.

  6. I think it may be better to have the boat dispensers in the overworld, as going through the portal in a boat doesn't play the spinning animation before teleporting. This will save you a little bit of portal time here and there.

  7. Suggestion for Mojang: interact directly with the world using items inside a bundle. Shift scroll holding a bundle to toggle through the items stored in it. Great way to store variants.

  8. I think that one possible solution to the block varients issue is kinda copying carpenters blocks from 1.7.10. They were just an empty pallete block, where you could attach blocks. This meant you could have blocks like diamond stairs or slabs, grass stairs, etc. It worked with almost every mod I can think of, so it has to be possible in some form (especially with the coding knowledge and power Mojang has). This would mean we would only need ONE item PER VARIENT (Eg stairs, fence, slab) for the ENTIRE block set of minecraft instead of having three+ varients per block for the entire block set. This would still mean that the stonecutter is still useful, as it could still be used to have a higher efficiency factor when refining items like stone to bricks.

  9. Okay so your idea I have kindof implemented for years as a super fast blast furnace use… but for colored variation of non-flammable blocks. Namely, un-dye-ing glass, hardened clay, ect…

  10. Over 1/5th of your inventory is taken by tools. I think if they added four tool/food slots along the hot bar that only accepted those items it would help out massively. You could still mouse scroll over to your tools and use the 1-9 hot keys but there would be a bonus two on each side of the hot bar that accepted those items. I'm looking at your inventory at the 16:00 minute mark and you have two picks, a hoe, a sword, an axe, a bow, and golden carrots.

  11. I cut pop out of my diet ages ago and although I still drink juice I usually water it down to 50% and it helped me feel SO much better. I try to cut down my other carbs but they taste so good!

  12. I'm studying health psychology and I recently learned some interesting things about alcohol. First of all, the guidelines are changing. The new standard is that no amount of alcohol is "safe". The recommendations are that if you drink it, drink less and if you've never had it, don't start. People also used to say that there were health benefits to drinking alcohol. However, studies have shown that the benefits are marginal and can be obtained through a number of non-toxic foods. While alcohol is a depressant and can make you drowsy, the quality of sleep while alcohol is in the body is reduced. Alcohol also has an influence on mental state. A study was conducted with individuals who were moderate to borderline heavy drinkers. Half of them were depressed at the start of the study and half of them weren't. They measured daily alcohol intake and mood. The most significant findings were with the non-depressed group. Over the three months of the study, their reported general happiness decreased as alcohol intake increased. One of the potential explanations intrigued me. The idea was that these people were turning to alcohol as a means of celebrating because they didn't have people to celebrate with. That then creates a mental connection between alcohol and reward that can go from special occasions to addiction relatively quickly.

  13. Hey Etho, you should put your boat system on the overworld side of the portal. That way, you can skip the portal animation by riding the boat through the portal and you can also add an automatic boat placer as well!

  14. 12:30 What I really want in the game is some kind of "drill" or "crusher" mechanism that breaks down blocks – e.g. stone brick stairs -> stone bricks -> stone -> cobblestone -> gravel -> sand. With the bonus of sand FINALLY becoming renewable. What do you think would be the most Minecrafty way of doing that – a block with a UI, a block that interacts with the world, or a mob that can be trained to do it?

  15. i think i almost prefer just rowing through the portals, it's way faster teleporting wise & you could make a simple water bucket & fire charge system to turn each one on or off depending on where you want to go

well.. i say simple system but you would have to be able to manually input whether you want the portals active or not whilst inside a boat or before the trip

maybe you could increase the signal strength of a line of skulk sensors by varying degrees based on which portal you want active?

like maybe use an auto crafter to set a degree of 1, 2, 3, etc, enabling the signal to go through with a piston system & lever system & then add those signals into a line of updating skulk sensors or another block that can carry a long signal consecutively, preferably fast enough that it travels slightly faster than you but slower than the loading of the world
