The Secret Developer Who Changed Minecraft Forever

Minecraft Viki (video wiki) ➜ https://minecraft.viki.gg

Around early 2010, a Minecraft player would briefly work with Notch during one of the most dramatic shifts in direction the game would ever see, this developer would end up adding one of the most iconic features to the game, only to be left behind as a footnote in history.

Hello Everyone, I hope you enjoyed this video, it's a major shift in direction from my normal content and I'm thinking of making other history based videos that go over neat little stories. I also spent about a month working on my skills as an editor and scriptwriter, I may have gone a bit overboard so please tell me if the transitions and animations were too much. Going forward it'll probably mellow out as I was trying a lot of different things.

While there really isn't a lot of scrutiny in the Minecraft community about getting claims made in videos correct, it's still important to me, and it's necessary to warn that most of the video comes from Paul Spooner's perspective and what he's said about it, as far as I know Notch and any others haven't really chimed in, so it's unlikely this story is 100% accurate, still, I try to find evidence of anything I say, a lot of the citations on the MC wiki are broken links or not relevant to what's written so I try to leave all that out. So hopefully it's like.. >90% accurate!

  2. The more I hear about the early Minecraft days, the more I realize how advanced they actually were. I started paying attention to the game in Alpha, and bought it in Beta. I always had the impression that things before these versions were very primitive and simple. However, with you and several others making videos on Classic/Indev/Infdev versions, I realize they were far from simple. Until recently, I had no idea they were making such intricate builds and creating fairly advanced mods and server plugins back then. Very cool to learn about!

  3. Thanks for making this video! I'm honored to have been a small part of the Minecraft experience, and it's nice to be remembered.

Yes, you did mess up the description of the distinction of a script from a mod, but you acknowledged it so kudos.

It's worth mentioning that starstone got an unofficial nod from the modding community by the addition of meteor impacts in the hexit modpack.
Here's a video I made recently with more details:

  4. They’re left as a minor foot note, because they didn’t really help “form Minecraft as we know it” more so just the early days.
Whatever team Mojang has now is what built Minecraft as it is today. At this point this person was just a step in helping Minecraft get where it is today, since I doubt they’re involved with the updates since 1.13, which have all been the best updates since 1.4 as most of the stuff between 1.5 and 1.12 have filled that void with mods till then.

  5. Funny how early on, everyone went back to older versions before InfDev because of how buggy it was….. forgetting this game wasn’t even in alpha, but early development stages.
    Also because those scripts.
It’s funny how quickly people can forget that a game is in development.

  6. 3:22 Do you know how many people you offended with that simple image? I'm not sure if this was just a joke or it was meant seriously but if it was serious, you are obviously very uninformed.
