I heard that the texture of the creeper was just the texture of alpha leaves covered on top of stone, which could be a reference to the creeper being a plant.
Edit: I did a bit of research on Reddit and someone commented that notch said if you hug a creeper, it will feel like you are hugging a pile of leaves
