  1. My personal theory is that the sniffer was a nether mob hence the color similarities to warped and crimson blocks. The ancient builders found their eggs and knowing what the other nether mobs could do the took the sniffer back to the overworld through ruined portals and placed them in seaside towns knowing most nether mobs are weak to water. Years later a giant tsunami engulfed the cities stopping the eggs from ever hatching in the cold wet environment. Until now, players are discovering the eggs in ocean ruins and taking them out of the water. Once the eggs are dry they hatch but after so long underwater the sniffers have lost their natural instincts to destroy and have become docile. They still remember how to dig from digging in the soul soil for mushroom and have brought that ability into the overworld.
