  1. If you think about it, suffocating isn't that different from drowning. The only difference is that there is a lot of pressure on your lungs when you are drowning due to the water entering them. If we ignore that, the fundamentals are the same. You can't inhale any oxygen so you are unable to breathe. Your lungs get more and more deprived of oxygen until you start dying. Eventually, the lack of oxygen becomes too much and you die. This is because both are forms of asphyxiation. If we look at the situation the difference between drowning in the ocean isn't that much different than being buried alive. You have something entering your lungs that places pressure on them and you are surrounded on all sides by that thing. The thing also prevents oxygen from entering your lungs. So the change where you have air bubbles before you start suffocating is actually more accurate than just immediately suffocating like it used to be.

  2. Another way to get a saddle is by fishing, which isn't even on the chart for hunger. I've gotten several saddles in my survival world that way, as well as many other useful items (like a bow with mending)
