On Minecraft's "useless" features #shorts

Minecraft Viki (video wiki) ➜ https://minecraft.viki.gg

This is a quick video on why “useless” features are added to Minecraft. Let me know if you have any feedback – this is my first time trying out shorts! I’m still going to be making longform content, of course.

  1. For anyone interested in reading about types of values (including Endogenous Value), I highly recommend the book "The Art of Game Design" by Jesse Schell. It's a must read if you're new to design and haven't read any books about the subject.

  2. I noticed that after the rebranding of this channel, a different channel called Team Abnormals has been created. Are you planning to do anything with the channel cuz I pre-subscribed? 🙂

  3. Reminds me of a time where someone argumented that Minecraft got worse over time and used the uselessnes of newer mobs compared to older mobs as argument…
Appearently parrots are an objectively better mob than glow squids cause they can warn you of creepers

  4. Terraria is minecraft are like the same thing but they focus on 2 different thing terraria focus on combat and boss battles and minecraft is about building they both have this but terraria has more bosses and minecraft has more things you can build they are both legendary games that everyone should play

  5. Biome or situation specific mobs really are useless

bats serve little purpose other than flying infront of the player while mining obsidian

polar bears only exist in uncommon encounters with ice

nitwits take up space that a villager with a profession could be using

glow squids have so much missed potential such as lighting up underwater caves to reveal ores and cave offshoots.

my only personal exception is the fox because they sleep during the day while no other mobs sleep at all

yes villagers sleep, but with their eyes open.

  6. Foxes seemed like clickbait. Everyone thought that they were getting Foxes as pets, but they made it so that they can only trust you. It's really unfortunate, because they reek of wasted potential.

  7. I make sure to kill mobs like polar bears because the whole reason they don't have drops is to take away incentive to kill them.

TLDR: I kill polar bears in Minecraft because Mojang doesn't like it

  8. i still think mobs should have some obvious use. maybe foxes could bring you some of your more valuable items upon death, bats could give signs of nearby mobs, pandas could drop bamboo spikes while theyre munching on bamboos (bamboo spikes could be used as traps), axolotls could have an aura of regenaration around them and nitwits could sense pillagers before they arrive.

ps: polar bears actively hunt humans in real life, so i dont know why theyre neutral in minecraft

  9. Giving additions endogenous value doesn't detract from their other potential values unless their value comes specifically from them being non endogenous. Pretty much all of these additions can and should have endogenous use, because Minecraft is a game that's core appeal should be to give everyone a way to express themselves and find value. Adding tons of non endogenous features really is a waste of time as it only appeals to a small niche of people that would still derive value from these additions whether they are practically useful or not. I don't think absolutely every addition inherently needs endogenous value, but the ratio of features they add that are non-endogenous is quite a slap in the face to the majority of their player base.

  10. Honestly I think polar bears really need a update, like how pandas and foxes have small but unique features.
The pandas being able to eat bamboo, eat cake and Have personalities
The fox being able to Carry any item, sleeping and sitting
Polar bears arent Interactable in any way, Polar bears should have one other feature rather than dropping fish apon dying.

I like how bats have no uses. Lol 🙂

  11. Another argument can be, that the value of something can be increased by adding "useless" values to it.
Like you always value villagers more when you previously encountered a lot of nitwits, or how you value iron more when you only found copper, coal or, even worse, diamond while not having the right tools.
Adding stuff that seems pointless can help increase the value or usefulness of other things.

  12. Well, I would agree. I hate it when people complain about the glow squid being useless all because of Dream accidentally rigging the 2020 mob vote, though I really wish that the polar bears could swim and eat fish like their real life counterpart.

  13. Bees don't drop anything, yet still player can interact with them, "tame" and use for pollinating farms. Bears are useless, the only unique mechanic is that the adults protect the cubs, but the ice biomes are so rare that you might not meet them for the entire playthrough, and if you do, you won't approach them because they have no interactivity.

  14. I agree that mobs that add immersion and a sense of environment are just as important as those that have a great and useful function such as say farm animals or Wolves. However for some mobs like Polar Bears or Bats i really do think that them doing nothing aside from just standing around in a biome you probably won’t encounter anyway is really lame. At least with Pandas they can be cute and with Foxes they do that cool little pounce thing but Polar Bears add no such personality imo.

  15. Well most people complain about these mobs because mc updates every year or every half a year so players expect something big from those updates not just mobs that look good that let's be honest could be made in a week

  16. I was so mad when people kept saying that the Iceologer should have won the mob vote because it 'had a use' and i was like wtf? It had no more use than the glowsquid it just had some attack animations.

  17. Ideas for Fixing "Useless" Mobs:

    Bats:
Make them seek out dark areas, like the Glare was supposed to do.

    Polar Bears:
Make them a unique danger for cold biomes that can be distracted by throwing fish, or scared off when taking enough damage. Meeting a polar bear should be scary. Like trying to fight an iron golem.

    Nitwits:
"Recruit" them with emeralds. They'll follow you around until they see a vacant workbench, then take up employment.

    Foxes:
They'll sometimes sneak under fences and eat one of your chickens. Scare them off using a pet wolf. Rabbits could do the same thing with crops!

    Pandas:
Gonna be honest, these animals genuinely ARE useless in real life. The only reason they're endangered is because they regularly forget how to mate, and require massive territories due to an extremely inefficient diet.

  18. I think the problem is that Minecraft has so few mobs, especially the "useless" aesthetic mobs, making them stand out like a sore thumb. and Minecraft also doesn't add many mobs in an update so a "useless" aesthetic mob feels like a waste of time.

  19. Mojang has talked a lot about how they want minecraft to represent different parts of the natural real world, and all the animals they add do a ton for that. Speaking as an American, there's already dogs and cats for me, but not everywhere in the world has them, and not every player can relate to owning or interacting with dogs/cats. Adding pandas, even if they don't have a direct gameplay use, still fulfills the important role of giving every player something to relate to and enjoy.

  20. Most of these have obscure uses that could be used for some kind of farm, or provide life where it normally wouldn't be there, bats, polar bears and pandas fit into the latter for the most part. With most people forgetting the primary function they were implemented for, bats for example, are meant to alert players to nearby caves.
