Minecraft Viki (video wiki) ➜ https://minecraft.viki.gg
In this video, I created a new game mode in minecraft called “Roguecraft”. This data pack aims to turn the base game into a roguelite experience. Every time you die, you’ll have to start a new run, a core concept of roguelikes, but you can also craft skillpoints to increase your power enough to face the ender dragon and beat roguecraft.

So that was unexpected. I was hoping that this video would do well, but it's by far the best performing video I've ever made. Thanks everyone! I'll update this comment every so often to reply to some common comments I got.
"Where is the resource pack download?"
The data pack can be downloaded on the same page as the data pack, but turns out there was another way to download stuff off of modrinth that I didn't know of, so I uploaded the resource pack as a standalone version to make it easier to find. It should now show up under "Featured version"
"Your description of Roguelikes sucked"
Honestly, yeah. This was just a fun discussion I had with with a friend once and I felt like this was the perfect place to bring it up. I know that there's a lot more to Roguelikes than what I mentioned, same with Roguelites, I just thought it was fun to bring up.
"This isn't really a Roguelite"
I think this data pack is in a gray area when it comes to the definition, but one thing I will say is that there will be some updates for this later down the line. One of the many goals for these updates is to make this more of a roguelite.
"Will you add X to the data pack?"
If the idea is good an it's possible to implement, there's a good chance! As I said, I have some updates planned, and while I have my own ideas of what to add, definitely keep the ideas coming! I love reading through the comments, so while I don't answer every single one, I see pretty much all of them.
"Can I make a video about this?"
YES, please do! I'd love to see some other people play this. The only thing I'm asking for is a download link in the description, though more credit would be much appreciated (you can also add something like "made by @monocodeyt" so I get a notification, that I believe that only works with a specific sub count).
Lastly, if you have any bugs to report, I don't have an issue tracker just yet (though I have something planned for that), so for the time being just post them in the comments.
Edit 1: Turns out the resource pack on modrinth is missing some textures, I'll fix this asap!
Edit 2: Resource pack is now updated, hopefully it should work now (https://modrinth.com/datapack/rogue-craft/version/H9SHRSlb)
Other than that, I saw some people mention that the reset run command is broken on newer versions, so I‘ll look into that tomorrow. Can‘t wait for this video to reach 20 quintillion views overnight lol
Edit 3: Turns out the data pack just doesn't boot up for some people. I think I know why this happens, so I'll work on a quick hotfix, but as a temporary fix, go to the coordinates 0 0, wait for the terrain to load and run "/reload"
How does this guy only have 2.7k subscribers. Let me change that
I really suggest nerfing the mine area ability. Now you can just focus on this ability and get a lot of diamonds/gold really quickly. Perhaps you can nerf it by only allowing it to mine ores depending on your pickaxe (you will need an iron pickaxe to be able to mine diamonds). Also would it be possible to get more interaction in the game? Now it feels like I'm just grinding skill points until I'm strong enough for the dragon. Maybe unlock new upgrades when you complete certain advancement. Expect that I really love this datapack. Great job!
I have no idea how datapacks work
but could I technically put this datapack on a server with mods?
idea for a second boss, the wither
after beating the ender dragon, you can either finish the run and try again, this time with modifiers, that make it harder, but gives you more skill points at the end of the run, or you can go to one of the end gates, and continue to play, making all of the endermen always angry at any nearby player.
The player(s) then need to go from end island to end island to find an end city with a ship, where they can get a nether star, causing the difficulty to jump to the max. When/If they return to the main island, they can then right click the egg with the star, causing the wither to spawn. Then after beating them (if they do manage to beat him) they can decide to rerun the normal run again, with even harder enemies to fight, where they can then try to fight an upgraded enderdragon again and then either finish or do the wither again.
and repeat until they die
my game always freezes when entering the end
I absolutely can't wait to try this! Such a great concept I've started to try making before but no where near this well put together nor as well thought out. Great video too!
hey man, the datapack is great and all but there's a bug where I can't use abilities (1.20.4), it keeps saying "You do not have enough mana for this ability" which doesn't make sense as I have max mana and regeneration, which is also unfortunate because I was almost ready for the dragon fight and upload my video 🙂 and yes I did the steps mentioned in your pinned comment and nothing worked, hope this gets fixed asap, but for the time being guess I'll continue grinding permanent upgrades.
update: after downloading the new resource pack difficulty level no longer works, it's stuck at 1
Awesome idea, this looks like it would be very fun.
Is the world different each time? How does the seed change when you die and go back to the hub?
this is sick as hell – it would also be cool if the player got debuffs as the difficulty increased like naturalRegeneration turned off
Been playing it for two days been having lots of fun with it! I do think that the 3rd skillpoint recipe that uses diamonds should be buffed though, to 4 skillpoints, copper is so much easier to find than diamonds which require going to significant depths that it's never felt worth the time for the 1 extra skillpoint.
If you could do a guide on how to install it, with details, i'm sure a bunch o f people would appreciate! looks sick!
This looks like a lot of fun!
whenever I enter the end, the game starts freezing, and after a few seconds just crashes. what do you think could be causing this? it's most likely the custom ender dragon fight, but im not exactly sure why its crashing
edit: and when i reenter the game, it kills the dragon and brings me to the endscreen…
This is awesome but for me the ability slots look like command blcoks. probably something to do with a resource pack. Do you now how I could fix this? Very cool datapack!
Yoo this data pack is fire im having so much fun!!
Me and my friend have been playing this, it's really fun! However, when we got to the end, my game near immediately crashed and it was terrible. If you could fix the game being literally unplayable once you get to the end, I would love that. Other than that it's great!!!
my fave rougelike is otherworld legends
I like that the difficulty is basically local difficulty but made into something actually meaningful. With some Risk of Rain dna, ofc.
Hmmm… Thumbnail and title look familiar… Good vid tho!
Just wow
I think it would be a lot funner/less odd if instead of giving the coordinates to the stronghold, the player gets a lodestone compass that is pointing towards those coordinates
It is a very fun datapack. Just one thing the water breathing can be kind of broken, you can just go to an underwater cave, with no drowned spawning and just farm up xp. So maybe make it like the turtle helmet effect just longer so it has a time limit, but only underwater.
That's not the definition of the term "roguelike".
MUCK!
Something great to say when someone has no skill is sounds like a skill issue
Ima play this rn
like the other commenters said, there should be some meta progression regarding the bosses, eg, killing the wither 5 times over the course of multiple runs, will unlock the stronghold, or something like that
would it be possible to make it compatible with aether? it is after all the mod of all time. nothing much, maybe some advancements, spells, and a class that starts in the aether?
This is amazing! I’m gonna get a friend and try it immediately
I played 6 hours, manage to get pretty much all upgrades. But then as soon as I entered the end my game crashed and wont let me join my world again which is pretty sad. Apart from that awesome datapack! Havent had this much fun in minecraft in years.
I want to try this on questcraft, anyone has tried yet? I want to know if it works before doing all the download and install process
Anyone know what game that was at the 0:16 mark?
This datapack is super awesome, but I've been having an issue where using any of the custom items seems to be wildly inconsistent and doesn't trigger like 90% of the time, for both the "ready" item and the abilities. This is super frustrating because it makes the abilities almost completely useless as it can take several seconds to trigger them even once regardless of mana, is there any fix for this? I'm not sure if it's server lag but the server isn't too laggy otherwise.
What shaders are used in this video? i absolutely love them and would love to try them out
Here’s a suggestion to improve the difficulty progression: instead of just having the armors increase in tiers, you can also give mobs potion effects like strength, speed, and even absorption to give them more hp. You can also slowly crank up spawn rates until there are mobs everywhere
there should be an easy difficulty that adds enchanted versions of every armor after their normal ones (leather>ench leather>chain>ench chain etc)
Hey, is there a way to increase the max of the shops to go above fortune 3 for example. I changed some things in the files but couldnt find it
The video says multiplayer support, however when I tried playing with a friend the difficulty counter didn't go up, and when one of us died, we would just respawn like nothing was wrong at all 🙁
This is awesome dude. an absolute beast of an idea to take on and I think you've done really well with it. Got so many ideas but feels unfair to state them unless I play it. Hope your channel grows like crazy off this, gotta take a look at some of your past work now. Excited to see what else you do!
