About this video: This video shows you how to update your Minecraft server to 1.17 or any version of Minecraft that you want. Even if 1.17 isn’t the most recent version, this video will still show you how to update a Minecraft server. We also show you how to backup your Minecraft server in order to ensure that you are updating your server safely and if something goes wrong, it can easily be undo.

The first step of updating your Minecraft server is downloading the new server file. You can find a link in the description above to a website with all of the server.jar files vanilla Minecraft has ever had. From main versions to snapshosts to really old versions, it’s all here! For this video, we would download 1.17. You will need to keep/save the file depending on your browser.

I also want to mention that you need to keep servers like kind. What I mean by that is that if you have a Paper server, you will need to download the Paper 1.17 server file to update it. If you want to update a modded server, you will need to download the Forge 1.17 server files to update your Forge modded Minecraft server to 1.17.

After you have your files downloaded, it is time to make a backup of your server. This is actually really easy. Just click on the server folder and copy it. Then right click on your desktop and click paste. Rename the new file to something like ‘Minecraft Server Backup’, and you are done. Move this file out of the way. This is insurance that if the update messes something up, you will able to get your world back.

Now, to update your Minecraft server to 1.17, just replace the server.jar file in your server folder with the new server.jar file you downloaded for 1.17. You may need to update your run.bat file if you are using one. At which point, you can start your Minecraft server like you normally do. It will automatically update your Minecraft server to Minecraft 1.17!

Is it really that easy? Yep, it is that easy. If you have plugins or mods, you will need to ensure those are updated as well before updating. If you have any issues, you can always roll back to your old server using the backup you created.

Congratulations! You now know how to update your Minecraft server to the newest version of Minecraft. 1. Thank you for the help w/ updating my server! 😀
I also got the same JNI error message that many did when I switched from 1.16.5 to 1.17.1, but I installed Java SE Development Kit 16, the Windows x64 Installer file, and that seemed to fix it! I'm sure you've already addressed this, but wanted to put in comments just in case! 😀

Do I have to go over every version? So 1.9, 1.10, 1.11, …. Is it possible to upgrade like this or do I have to set a complete new setup for this?
