  1. Please help us!
About a month ago, a student was sexually assaulted at Hawthorne Academy within our school district, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). She reported to the school administration and to the police. The police investigation took about 2 weeks and found that there was enough evidence to press charges, as the student himself even admitted to the assault. Despite this, the school investigation several weeks later came back very differently.

The student was suspended for filing a “false report”. They attempted to pressure her into signing a Nondisclosure Agreement about the incident. They even forced her to take a course called “Sexual Harassment is Preventable”, which is supposed to be for sexual offenders.

While this may sound like a horrific isolated incident, this has been happening within CMS for years.

My name is Nikki Wombwell. I was raped at Myers Park High School in October of 2014 at 15 years old after my ex-boyfriend told me he had brought a gun to school. I reported to the school the next day, but nothing was done. He continued to threaten and harass me for the next month and a half until finally I reported again. This time the school resource officer told me that it wasn’t rape because it wasn’t the first time that I had been sexually active with my assailant. The principal Mark Bosco told me that if I filed a formal complaint and my perpetrator was found innocent, I could be disciplined or even suspended for having sex on campus. I was so scared by the threat I never pressed charges or pursued an investigation. My rapist was never arrested, expelled, or even suspended.

My name is Serena Evans. Almost exactly two years after Nikki, on October 25th, 2016, I was raped in a boys bathroom at Myers Park High School by a football player. I was not informed of an investigation, and Title IX was not mentioned. My rape was shoved under the rug, and I was told that I was not allowed to talk about my rape with anyone. My rapist and my school had told me the exact same thing. I was also told that if I were to go through with an investigation and my rapist was found innocent I would be suspended because "I broke the rules by being in the boy's bathroom". I was informed that the suspension would go on my school record resulting in colleges not wanting to accept me. Due to the enormous amounts of neglect at the hands of Myers Park, my mom was forced to sell our house to allow me to attend a “safer” school, while Mr. Senior Star Football Player continued to be a glorified athlete with no consequences.

Recently we have come forward with our stories, starting a conversation throughout Charlotte about how schools treat student survivors. There have been multiple protests, the creation of a Title IX task force, and a petition telling Nikki’s story which has received over 63,000 signatures. Despite the surmounting public pressure to finally take survivors seriously, it seems our school district has not received the message.

There have been at least 3 more cases within CMS since our protests started, including the Hawthorne case. Survivors and those who speak up for them continue to be silenced and threatened. If anything, CMS has become more punitive, as they threatened and punished those who protested and spoke out at Olympic and Myers Park and suspended a girl at Hawthorne for reporting an assault. They continue to ignore our cries for justice and are solely focused on maintaining their reputation instead of doing what’s right.

The response by CMS and school administrators in the Hawthorne case and our own shows that survivors are not being believed or supported by the school system. That is why we are having this protest. Survivors must be believed, supported, and their cries for change listened to. Change is needed, from greater peer support, to stronger non-retaliation policies, to swift consequences for schools who violate students’ Title IX rights.

Enough is enough. No one should have to live through something as traumatizing as rape or assault, then be retraumatized or bullied by their school system. Current students, future students, and the thousands of survivors failed by the school system deserve better. We demand better.

This shouldn’t solely rest on the backs of survivors. If you or your organization are able to help in any way, please reach out to us. We’d appreciate whatever support you can give.

    Thank you,
Amplify Survivors (Serena Evans and Nikki Wombell)

  2. I really like the concept, but one of the main reasons I like watching the spectrum series is bc you get to visually see people's reactions to things and see them interacting with eachother. I understand what they were going for, but it all seemed a bit bland to me.
