  1. This is a decent starter mob farm. Definitely not an xp farm by design.

Instead of tearing down the original pillar and building up a new one, why not just extend the platform out 7 blocks from the start? For this to actually be an xp farm, you need to stand at the trident killer. The farm should be 21-22 blocks up at the water level, then about 24-25 blocks above for the first spawn platform. Putting buttons down only kills spawn rates and spiders still spawn, taking up the mob cap.

Ideally, you want to make 2×2 holes and use buttons or coral fans instead of trapdoors. Make sure to have a 2 block gap away from the wall as well. Trapdoors just create more spots for mobs to stand on, helping them stay on the platform until they despawn, reducing your rates even further.

For increased rates, using your model, I would make 4 modules around the trident killer, bring the whole platform in by 2 blocks so the water comes to the edge of the trident killer and open the 2×2 hole above it. I'm sure this is supposed to be a starter farm, so add the modules in over time, extending the spawn platform into the middle area above the trident killer hole as well. The more spawn spots you have, the higher the rates.

Eventually, you'll want to waterlog all pistons and use Impaling V on the trident for faster kills.

Another trident killer design would be to raise the observers up one block and put stairs in their old place so you could waterlog them. It would be less hassle.

Sticking with this design, you would need to add a glass pane to the floor of the trident killer and a campfire below the glass pane to delete the orbs so they don't lag out the world. The xp orbs are buggy.

OR, you could make a water channel/elevator to bring the xp to you, depending at what Y level you stand at.

Also, let's not forget phantoms exist and build some kind of roof above your afk spot. Phantoms don't spawn as long as you have solid blocks above you (another reason to build the module upward, and above you).
