This dude is literally his own worse enemy. He makes so many decisions that absolutely screw him that were all easily avoidable. those "things" are called Ravagers
edit: that bug you saw with red wings and a stinger was from a game called Fallout: New Vegas and those bugs are called Cazadors which are highly venomous radiation-evolved versions of Wasps (side note in spanish Cazador/Cazadora is spanish for Hunter)
