A Minecraft Movie details reveal more about Jason Momoa’s character, Garrett, with director Jared Hess calling him a “noob.” Momoa stars as one of four misfits dealing with everyday struggles who are unexpectedly transported into the cubic realm from the famous video game, and must team up with an expert crafter to return home. Other than Momoa, the Minecraft Movie cast includes Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge.

During Minecraft Live 2024 (via ComicBook), director Jared Hess revealed more details about Jason Momoa’s character in A Minecraft Movie. The director revealed that Garrett is a former world champion video gamer from the late 1980s who is stuck in the past and hasn’t matured much since then. However, despite his gaming experience, he is inexperienced when it comes to Minecraft.

  9. Adult Minecrafter here. My husband and I run a large online gaming community of over 300 people and we have hosted several Minecraft servers (all modded Minecraft). I love the game, my 5 year old loves the game, and my husband loves the game! Vanilla Minecraft doesn't have much lore or characters (at least that I'm aware of in my 10+ years playing it), so I'm not sure why people would be offended with the cast in the movie trailer. The whole idea of Vanilla Minecraft is that you pick a character that represents YOU, maybe add a cute skin, and then you create your own world (usually with friends). Some of the preset characters that you can choose from do come with names (Steve is the main default character). But in this case, representation is not a bad thing and it is actually pretty accurate with how you play the game. It's an open world creative game where the only characters that exist are the ones that you and your friends create as their avatars (minus the monsters and animals). If people don't like the way that the movie trailer looks, they obviously have not played Modded Minecraft. In Modded Mincraft, you can download and add a bunch of textures and effects to enhance the game. It's super fun and sometimes sheep really do look furry! All in all, this doesn't seem like a woke, total flop, horribly PC movie version of the game. At least…not yet. I'll still probably watch the entire movie through before allowing my kid to see it, but overall, it looks fine to this Minecraft veteran!
