A note for future playthroughs, and assuming the version allows it, I have sometimes had to make a composter or use early bones to make bonemeal if I had multiple colors of wool. Assuming I had one or two white ones already, iI could 'wash' a colored one with white dye. I'm pretty sure that's vanilla behavior, but not something I would do normally if given the chance. Sometimes sheep just do not spawn and you kill them before even thinking about dyes.
