On the launcher, click skins – select your current skin & click edit – Select new migrator cape.

I wonder if I should do it, migrating to a Mojang account from the old username and password system was a big pain because all my families Minecraft accounts were bought/created under the same email address. That was literally multiple frustrating years of confusion and occasional calls to Mojang support but I think we got it straightened out last year. I hope we can do it right this time, I've always wanted a cape, heck I wanted to go to the first two Minecons but I couldn't get there. Then again there's something nice about sticking it to Microsoft and showing support for Notch by keeping it a Mojang account. I guess I'll think about it, I've been getting the migrate banner.

HOW TO PROPERLY MIGRATE: Open the Minecraft Launcher, you'll see a gray little banner at the bottom that tells you that you can get a cape.
Click on that, simply make a Microsoft account or login to one you already know (not responsible for any random account issues) then make sure you have the new Minecraft launcher downloaded since they released a totally new one. Afterwards, login with your new migrated account, then go to skins -> edit your skin -> you'll find an option to put on a cape. That's it, it's simple.
